The Mercedes-Benz 300SL was conceived as a sports-racer, not a road car, proving its mettle on the track before the production model appeared. In subsequent years standard 300SLs were to notch up an impressive number of rally successes.
It all began with a small number of racing SL prototypes built in 1952 which won that year"s Le Mans 24 Hours and the marathon Carrera Panamericana among other contests. As Stuttgart"s first post-war competition cars they combined suspension and running gear from the then new 300 series production models with a light, multi-tube space-frame chassis wearing special coupé bodywork. Full-height side opening doors would have compromised rigidity in the high-sided chassis so half-height doors, hinged at the roof centre to lift upward, were developed for the car, the now famous "gullwing"design.
The 300SL engine was a 3.0 litre in-line six with dry sump lubrication and Bosch mechanical fuel injection, the latter a world first for a production car. It was also one of the most potent engines of its day, providing top speeds of 130 to 165mph depending on gearing. The car"s advanced chassis design ensured great strength and safety, whilst providing fine handling thanks to its light weight. An interesting Gullwing feature was the steering wheel hinged at the base of its hub to tilt almost upside down, thus easing driver entry/exit.
SL styling hardly needs comment, except to note that it was much lower and sleeker than that of contemporary sports cars. Distinguishing features such as the big tristar grille emblem, wheelarch "eyebrows"and egg crate front-wing louvres adorned the body, whilst the purposeful interior was somewhat reminiscent of a Messerschmitt fighter plane!
The 300SL cost a fortune: £5,600 for the Gullwing in 1954 against £1,400 for a Jaguar XK120, but excellence is never cheap, and the SLs were magnificent: solid, handsome and very fast. In fact, nothing could outpace them for years except for the occasional Ferrari, which was hardly a "production"car in those days. The 300SL won more competitions in its time than virtually any other car since. There are far too many victories to list here: suffice to say that no other manufacturer could field a car that could combine such speed, reliability and all-round ability as the 300SL, which allowed it to excel in events as varied as the Targo Florio, Mille Miglia and Le Mans.
We are very pleased to offer for sale this very fine example which has resided in a small but exclusive collection for the last 10 years. Prior to his ownership the car was with its former owner for a decade where it is was maintained on an active storage program by one of the country"s premier storage companies. They had purchased the car from Gerry Porter, the well known 300SL aficionado during the late 1980s prior to which it had undergone a sympathetic and thorough rebuild by one of the leading marque specialists.
Stylishly finished in black with a contrasting rich red hide interior this magnificent example boasts the exceptionally rare and highly prized optional fitted luggage; an extra which further enhances the desirability of what must be one of the nicest SL Gullwings available today. Described as being in excellent condition throughout, this car has covered limited mileage while in his ownership and is supplied with a V5 document and old MoT certificates. Ideally suited to any collection of the marque, or indeed to anyone looking for the best example on the market today.

Introduction
Mercedes-Benz- one of the world's oldest automotive brands that still manufactures cars- epitomizes German engineering excellence. The Mercedes Star
Gottlieb Daimler, the founder of DMG, had once marked a star over his house on a picture postcard and written that the star symbolises prosperity and will one day shine over his factory. After his death, his sons Paul and Adolf decided to use the symbol as the trademark / logo.
The star underwent some modifications over the years and in 1916, the tips of the star were surrounded by a circle- this has become the universally recognisable symbol of Mercedes.
History
The story behind Mercedes is rather interesting. Mercedes was the name of the daughter of Jellinek (DMG automobile racer)! As a successful racer, he managed to have his daughter’s name on the engines of a series of sports cars. Later he was placed on the board of directors of DMG.
In 1901, the company introduced a successful racing model for sale, the Mercedes 35 hp.
In 1926, Benz & Cie. and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) underwent a merger and the merged entity became Daimler-Benz AG. However, as the usage of the name Daimler was not allowed in several countries, the company decided to use the name Mercedes. This was also done since the company believed that the name brought it luck.
In 1999, DaimlerChrysler bought 51 percent shares of AMG after which it was renamed as Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
Mercedes and innovation go hand in hand. One of the major innovations by the company was the creation of the world's first robot car in the 1980s, whose performance fuelled global interest in research for robot cars.
